I'm so glad you guys are watching my all-time favorite season of Buffy! (Seasons 3 and 5 are tied for second.)

Sure, the fights are just fights, but you have to keep in mind that this show was on the WB, not HBO. Buffy started as a winter mid-season replacement and was given a chance for season 2, but not a huge budget. As a result, the special effects aren't so special (and really won't be until season 4). Thankfully, the vampire makeup got considerably better this season.

Here's a great example of what Joss Whedon was working with at the time. When he was asked why vampires turn to dust, he had two replies: 1. It's a really cheap effect. 2. It's a convenient device. Characters don't have to spend time burying or burning bodies.

The amazing thing is, Whedon made up for lacking special effects with solid story arcs and character development thanks to some of the most talented writers in television (IMHO). He kept the underlying story themes totally relatable. For example, guys don't lose their souls when they make the sweet love, but some sure seem to. "I slept with someone who said he loved me and now he won't call" is an experience, or at least a fear that resonates with many of us. Does the tone seem too melodramatic at times? Well, teenagers are pretty melodramatic.

And aren't Spike and Drusilla two of the best villains ever?! You've got to love that people so evil (and in Dru's case, unbalanced) have this underlying affection.

More of what makes this show so special is coming in the next few episodes and I don't want to spoil anything. Let me just say that the first half of the season was fun, but the second half gets you addicted. Can't wait for you to talk about it!
